I am not an Arts critic but tonight I am inspired to write a review, not my usual places to visit or shopping Mall type of review at all. So forgive me.
There is a teacher here in Johannesburg who I have come to know in a small way. Her Ballet school has staged Sleeping Beauty this weekend at the Roodepoort Theatre and she invited me to come and watch a performance, which I gladly accepted.
I have worked with every level from 3 year old beginners to professionals and know the Sleeping Beauty Ballet extremely well. It is a difficult ballet.
This is what I saw.
Yana Auger has an amazing eye for staging, and an extremely sensible approach to setting this level of work on young dancers. Adapting choreography, while maintaining the integrity of the original, working around the usual lack of male dancers with sensitivity and good taste, and then....
Beautifully costumed, simple but effective sets and my favourite part, the assurance that every dancer truly understands just how important good corps de ballet is in support of the Solo and Principle roles.
A disciplined, confident performance enjoyed by a tired but newly inspired teacher.
Looking for something to do tomorrow afternoon, a visit to Roodepoort Theatre with the family is recommended.
