Russian School of Ballet presents The Golden Key

PARKHURST, JOHANNESBURG (October 3, 2019) – The Russian School of Ballet presents its new ballet – The Golden Key or The Adventures of Buratino in November, 2019 at the Roodepoort Main Theatre. Ballet dancers will delight audiences with Russian-inspired classical choreography that tells a story that has been a delight to young ones and the young at heart for many decades.

Based on the classic book, The Golden Key or The Adventures of Buratino by the famous Russian writer, Aleksey Tolstoy, this act remains one of the most celebrated classical stories. Stunning Russian sets and costumes pair with challenging choreography and a touch of comedy as Buratino plays a central role in a noble adventure that is filled with surprises at every turn.

The ballet begins with Papa Carlo creating Buratino from a log, but his sloppy woodwork sees Buratino come out with a long nose. Buratino suddenly comes to life and Papa Carlo tries to shorten his nose, but Buratino refuses. Papa Carlo then sells his only good jacket to buy an Alphabet book for Buratino and sends him to school. However, the boy becomes distracted by an advertisement for a local puppet theater show, and exchanges his book for a ticket to the show. There he befriends other puppets, but the evil puppet master Karabossa Barabossa wants to destroy him because Buratino disrupted the show.

Karabossa Barabossa releases Buratino after she learns that Papa Carlo’s home contains a secret door. A Golden Key that Karabossa once possessed, but later lost, opens this secret door. The story proceeds to tell of Buratino and his friends’ hunt for the Golden Key, and their struggle against the evil Karabossa and her loyal friend, Duremar, as well as a couple of crooks: Alice the Fox and Basilio the Cat, who are after Buratino’s coins. Through twists and turns in the plot, the key is eventually found and the story has a happy ending.

The Russian style sets and costumes seen in this production of The Golden Key showcase the creativity of the Russian School of Ballet.
